The Torma church manor of the early 19th centurt has been described in detail by one of its residents - Georg Julius von Schultz (pseudonym Dr. Bertram). In his memoirs Baltische Skizzen, Schultz (1808-1875) dedicated several chapters to portray his childhood environments at the church manor. The memoirs provide a both minute and analytical account of the manor’s appearances ranging from arrangement of furniture to qualities of certain materials. Schultz also depicts scenes of everyday life among both the masters and servants of the manor. In 1853-1896, the manor lodged the pastor Carl Selmar von Landesen. His tenure coincided with Carl Robert Jakobson’s time as the principal at the Torma parish school 1859-1862. Jakobson, who would become an influential leader of the radical wing of the Estonian national movement, left Torma due to disagreements with Landesen and the Torma landlord, Otto von Liphart.
